Valverde<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The Guest house, built by the Cipolla family, still owners of the property, was the only one in the area, <strong>entirely constructed with the precious red marble and white stone of Taormina in the typical Liberty style of those years<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b25b65 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0b25b65\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p>It owes its name to the ancient monastery of Santa Maria Valverde of the Convent of the Penitential Sisters of the Congregation of Valverde, built in 1275 and located in <strong>Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II<\/strong> (also known as \u201cPiazza Badia\u201d).<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d24683 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d24683\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p>When the law on the suppression of religious orders and the expropriation of their property was enacted in 1866, the building has passed at the disposal of Carabinieri and still remains its headquarter. The church adjacent to the monastery was first used as a theater, known as the Teatro Regina Margherita (in honor of the wife of King Umberto I), and then in 1960 the place of the theater was taken by the <strong>Palazzo dei Congressi<\/strong> (Palace of Congresses), where numerous international conferences and events are held.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-57f68c5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"57f68c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p>The villa, which has been used as a family residence since the 70s, a century after its foundation and after a careful <strong>renovation<\/strong> is now returning to its ancient vocation. During the Second World War, Ciccio witnessed how German troops, stationed in Taormina, completely occupied the pension Villa Valverde, which was then run by his father. After the war, while studying at school, he developedd and deepened his passion for classical sciences. The following and accurate self-taught studies lead him to participate in the first Italian TV quiz show \u201c<strong>Lascia o raddoppia?<\/strong>\u201d (&#8220;Leave it or double it?&#8221;) in 1957, thereby making his name and the name of Taormina known throughout the country.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cc5df17 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cc5df17\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p>A political activist and a great historian, and a lover of his city, he dedicates his whole life to the revaluation and the improvement of the territory, establishing first a radio programme, \u201c<strong>C&#8217;era una volta Taormina<\/strong>\u201d (There was once Taormina), and then writing two of the most important texts about the history of Taormina: the historical and archaeological work \u201c<strong>C&#8217;era una volta Taormina ed il suo territorio<\/strong>\u201d (There was once Taormina and its territory), which traces the history of Taormina from prehistoric times to the unification of Italy and \u201c<strong>Toponomastica Tauromenitana<\/strong>\u201d (Toponymy of Taormina), which describes the etymological origins of the names of streets and places in Taormina.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba1bdfa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ba1bdfa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p>For his cultural commitment and popularization of history, he was awarded various prizes, including the \u201c<strong>Assemblaggio Citt\u00e0 di Spoleto<\/strong>\u201d<strong> prize<\/strong>, the \u201c<strong>Luigi Pirandello<\/strong>\u201d<strong> prize<\/strong> and the \u201c<strong>Citt\u00e0 di Taormina<\/strong>\u201d <strong>prize<\/strong>, becoming one of the greatest experts in local history.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3985cbd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3985cbd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p>Between the 80s and 90s he founded and led the local branch of the <strong>Archaeoclub<\/strong>, which became one of the most active on the east coast.<\/p><p>Today he continues to be remembered as one of the most important personalities of the historical and cultural scene of Taormina.
